Women's History Month - guest post by Sherwood Smith

Mar 02, 2014 23:50

What ought I tell you about Sherwood Smith that she can't tell you herself? Not much. You can find her on Live Journal at sartorias or over on her webpage and her writing manifests in those places, but also in many good books. She's a longtime supporter of WHM, so it's a great pleasure to have a guest post by her today.

Her letters are such a joy to read. She's been a heroine of mine for years, I have to admit.

I bet there are more of them in French--gosh I wish I could get overseas for a couple of months. I know some immersion could boost my French to decent reading level, sigh.

There must be.
I get my French books from Amazon.fr, who are very quick. I find that helps keep my French going. I also read manga in French: there's a much wider range of titles, many of them much more female-focused (my all time favourite is Berusaiya no Bra, The Rose of Versailles, which is about a woman cavalry officer in the French Revolution).

I have some Asterixes in French, that I picked up in Paris in the mid-seventies (the rest are all in German). That is a good idea.

Speaking of interesting royal women, Alison Weir has recently published a biography of Elizabeth of York. I'd like to read that.

I know it may seem unlikely, but Germany does occasionally fund research by "independent scholars": Places to check out
http://www.research-in-germany.de/dachportal/en/Research-Areas-A-Z/Humanities.html
The NEH is supposed to fund non-university-affiliated individual researchers:
http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends

This one sounds interesting: JOHN SIMON GUGGENHEIM MEMORIAL FOUNDATION (GF)
Fellowships to Assist Research and Artistic Creation Website: www.gf.org

The others listed here http://www.ghi-dc.org/publications/ghipubs/rg/rg019/4grantsger.pdf
tend to specify doctorates and academic affiliation.
I'll write you a letter of support if you do apply to anything!

I wish there was a good biography about Theophanu, the Byzantine princess who - aged 12 - married Otto II, and after his early death was regent for their infant son, Otto III (and kicked some serious ass when one Heinrich, aptly nicknamed the Troublemaker - der Zänker kidnapped her son and ursurped the throne). One can only wonder how the girl felt, coming into a culture very different from the Byzantine one. She left her marks in arts, architecture, and history - and a few novels I don't trust. ;-)

I think there might be one in French - but I can't remember the details (I"m not much use today, I'm afraid, my brain is entirely in 13th century France).

I've read some bits and bobs about her--she really would be a great subject for a novel!
