Olympic Relay

I didn't think we would bother with the Olympic torch as it passed through our town, but in the end it seemed like a little bit of history worth seeing. The fact that we could park easily at our friends' place just a hundred yards or so from the route helped a little too.

We got there in plenty of time. The road was lined with people, but not overcrowded, with a couple of friendly policefolks to keep them on the pavement.

The first few vehicles through were police motorbikes with flashy blue lights, then a bus from which stepped "our" torchbearer.

He was happy to have lots of photos taken - almost all the children in the vicinity had pictures with him.

Various advertising buses came through. Commercialism is the name of the Games these days, after all.

Almost everyone was waving a flag of some sort. I rather liked the two-in-one combination here.

Eventually - on schedule - the previous torchbearer showed up and they posed for photos as the new torch was lit.

Excitement over, we headed back to our friends' garden.

Where refreshment and relaxation were the order of the day.

It was fun, less hyped than I expected and more enjoyable. It felt very "local", very much a Kenilworth event as part of a national thing. I'm rather glad we decided to go along after all.
