Fannishness

An idea nicked from woman_of_ - a sort of potted history of how I became a fangirl.

I think
Dr Who, Thunderbirds and
The Man From Uncle were my earliest TV passions. I didn't write fic, because it never occurred to me, but as a very nearly teenager I lived my fantasies, talking to characters inside my head when I was alone (walking to and from school was particularly good for that) and developing a serious obsession with Ilya Kuriakin. I bought the
Lady Penelope comic/magazine for a couple of years too. I remember the first ever edition came with a magic "X-ray" hairband, with a "P" on it, through a hole in the centre of which you were supposed to be able to see the bones in your hand. I think it had a bit of feather in it.

Then I fell for Jon Finch in a short-lived TV show called
Counterstrike. He was so gorgeous - and my homework diary had a picture of him, nicked from the Radio Times on the front. We used to pass it around between us under the bench during Biology lessons, so we could all drool. The term after the show was replaced by
Doomwatch and all my friends fell for Toby Wren instead, but I stayed loyal to Jon Finch - which is why I've always had a soft spot for the Polanski
Macbeth, BTW!

Then I got involved in drama and went to university and didn't really have a TV for six or seven years. I loved
Blake's Seven (especially Avon) but was never fannish in the same way. It wasn't really until
Buffy that I got that hooked again. Initially I didn't ship anyone at all, just loved the wit and the characters, but then, gradually, a certain vampire stole my heart...

Since finding the
Buffy fandom I've returned to writing and found myself getting almost as excited about a couple of other shows -
Being Human and TW, mainly. Nothing on quite the same scale, though. I'm afraid books always come first in my life, anyway. Given the choice for my desert island I'd have to ask for eight books and one CD, not the other way round!
