I agree that spending on national defense in the United States is incredibly high -- but one must understand the duties a world superpower like the United States must take on. With third world nations looking upon the States to solve practically the majority of domestic civil wars, the price does not come cheap. One must keep in mind that the majority of expenses regarding military power do not go towards domestic protection, but foreign affairs. I particularly don't like the approval of the Iraq war -- 400 billion dollars and counting could have easily been spent on improving the American educational, welfare or healthcare system -- all of which are lacking under a conservative government.
If world poverty is an issue as it seems to be, voting conservative perhaps isn't in your best interests. Christianity certainly is a large part of the conservative platform, and I know that's a major issue to you, but so is a very capitalistic, free-market system that sometimes allows the impoverished to be exploited. I'm far from a socialist. Economically speaking, I'm tilting to the right. Socially, I'm very liberal -- a libertarian if you will. But I guess it's all about balancing what's important.
