The Hobbit: My first off-the-cuff reactions!

Just came back from watching The Hobbit. I was smiling with glee as I exited the theatre, - obviously a good sign. The movie wasn't perfect, but I am much less invested in this than I was in LotR, and I thoroughly enjoyed this. Here are my first reactions to the movie, under a cut as there are spoilers...

I had to see the Hobbit early so I could participate in the conversation!

I found the film great fun, and Freeman as Bilbo rules. I think PJ got the tone very right in this; less serious than LOTR, but earnest and fun. He really caught the nobility of the Dwarves, which was sadly lacking in his "comic relief" Gimli.

So much of this was really well done. The vistas, as you said! His specialty. His dialog especially improved immensely this time around, and I suspect a great deal of it is because he gave himself room to quote directly from the book, rather than summarizing and switching lines between characters.

I agree there was too much pointless action in this, but it didn't bewilder me the way his manufactured scenes in LOTR (especially TTT) did. It was easy enough to "watch around" them, since the story remained intact. At no time did Thorin kiss a horse, which was also an improvement.

I actually liked Galadriel's super-poses; it seemed to me like an otherworldly thing you might experience, as Elves are kinda just really different from humans. But the bird poop was ridiculous. The sleigh bunnies were great.

Really a good time overall, and I look forward to seeing it again.

Hugs to you! I hope all is well.

Glad you liked it too, Mariole! Sorry for being so tardy in replying, I guess the big Christmas stress had gotten to me there for a day or two, though all is well. I hope you'll be enjoying lovely holidays with family and friends. :)
