"Of Dogs and Men" - another Brokeback fic

One-shot Brokeback fic (1,500 words), movie canon, Jack and Ennis POVs, mild angst, timeline post-divorce fairly late in their relationship.

Oh, my! This is *beautifully* written, and very perceptive. You've captured that slip and slide of emotional moods quite clearly, and portrayed Jack's despair succinctly but completely. This is really good!
Love,
Jenna

It makes me ache for both of them, you really did a good job to make me feel the desperation and the hurt in both of them.
Thank you.

Hi. Gillian!

I didn't know you write. And that you are a good writer!

This was excellent. You portrayed so well Jack's playful mood and his sudden change. But also Ennis's thoughts: ''Ennis snorted helplessly, breathing in all those unspoken words, feelin them rip their way into his chest, suffocating him and tearing at his heart with claws of tire-iron steel.''

Just one question: I understand the reference to Steinbeck in the title, but what about Burns? Do you mean Robert?

Thank you for writing!

Antonella

I started trying to write little bits and pieces just a month ago. :-) Before that I was a reader and a reader only. Thanks so much for your positive comment, and also for posting the link over at DC!

Yep, I was thinking of Robert Burns. Steinbeck's novel title "of Mice and Men" comes from a poem called "To a mouse" written by Robert Burns, the poem line I believe goes as follows: "The best laid schemes of mice and men, gang oft agley..." So I figured if they could use mice symbolically, I could borrow that, just use a dog instead.

Dear Gillian,

Thank you for taking time to explain this to someone who never studied English literature in school ;-) (but I did read Steinbeck on my own).

I'm happy you started writing! Although sometime with fics I get this feeling ''Neven enough time!'', and now I've got one writer more to follow...

I wish you a nice weekend!

Wishing you a lovely weekend in return. :-)

Yes, I feel there's far too little time for fic reading too. And as for writing... even less so. So please don't worry,- the little I've written to date are mostly few and very short pieces. And it's not likely that will change much in future unless I can find a way to live a double life!

This is lovely, and really poignant. There's a cloud waiting to dim even the best moments now, because Jack can never get what he truly wants, and Ennis knows that he is the source of that pain. The writing is very effective. I'll be looking out for your work in the future.
