"Tragic" - a double drabble for the "T" prompt

Brokeback double drabble (200 words), written for the drabble community’s "T" prompt, Rating G, no warnings. The usual disclaimers apply.

Tragic

She sobs piteously, hanging on to his arm for dear life, as if she wouldn’t be able to remain upright without him.

They get inside the car and she turns towards him, sniffling. Her nose is red, her eyes too. She looks devastated.


“That was the most tragic film I’ve ever seen! Losing his love like that, after what they’d gone through, pain and adversity... and they were so perfect together!”

He pats her arm awkwardly, muttering comforting nothings.

He didn’t really want to go see it, but she insisted. Probably figured it would do him good, get in touch with his emotions or some such. Huh. Well, it sure worked for her, she’ll have to be content with that.

“I wish they could have had a happy ending. Life’s so unfair,” she sighs brokenly.

He nods and starts the truck for home, keeping his thoughts to himself.

Yeah, the story was sad, but it was just a film. True love, tragic loss, nothing much to do with the real world. Typical Hollywood tear-jerker!

Ennis turns the corner down their street, glancing in Alma’s direction. She’s still drying her eyes, still completely lost in the tragic and bittersweet Love Story.

A/N: The film “Love Story” is from 1970. Its most famous line happens to be “Love means never having to say you're sorry.” I guess Brokeback in its way serves to contradict that statement….
