For a very long time, I have wanted to own a Hammond Organ with a Leslie Speaker. I found my Hammond M-3 over 4 years ago. The M-3 is known as the "Baby B", identical to the B-3 except for 41 key manuals, percussion only on the top manual, and lack of fold-back. It has been the Leslie that has eluded me. While there are always dozens of Leslies on E-bay, due to their size and weight, not only do you need to find one that is the right model, in decent shape, and at a fair price, it needs to be within a distance that you are willing to drive to pick up.
Today, less than an hour away, I picked up my very own Leslie 21H. I have a mod kit on its way to convert it from a single speed to a dual speed. At that point, it will be pretty much identical to a 122.
After that, I need to find and install a connector kit into the M-3 and due the fold-back mod (which is going to be a bitch, but I think I am going to give it a go. Hammond techs are dying off faster than an endangered species, so I better get used to doing my own maintenance and repairs.) and I will have, for all intents and purposes, a B-3/122 setup, just smaller, lighter, and costing me thousands less than the real thing.
I'm off to put together a mix CD of the greatest Hammond driven songs ever. Any suggestions?
