Yup, today I started work with an old trainer contact of mine (I've worked with her before, but not for a while), and started it on a GREAT foot. Headed over in the morning, met the people I'll be working with (all seem lovely), and then was getting the tour and introductions to all the horses.
Then, we start hearing strange noises from one of the horse's stalls - sure enough, this poor mare is in process of getting cast (she's lying on her side, but stuck up against a wall with her feet against the wall, so she can't straighten them enough to get up). Horses can seriously injure themselves this way, so we're naturally concerned. We're peering in over the stall wall while one of the barn guys vaults through the windows, when...
The mare manages to strain against the wall with such force that she breaks the entire stall front off, sending it (and me) flying across the aisle. Now I'm lying in sawdust with my foot stuck under a wall while this poor horse is looking like she's going to have a heart attack. I must have been hit by the bars as it fell, because I have some nice bruising on my face and my shoulder. Otherwise I'm okay, though. Mare is a little cut up but also seems okay.
GAH EMPLOYMENT FAIL. WAY TO GO ME.
Please, cheer me up with stories of first-day-at-work disasters that turned out okay?
