There was a time (not that long ago) when I also would have said 'this could never happen'. But as you say now . . . It's a really scary thought. I can see why you it drew you in.

That's it, exactly. What we're seeing all around us, it's frightening how much it tracks with the book. Especially here in the States.

It really is. Now I'd say especially here in the UK. Which is terribly sad for both countries as we are thinking that way.

I hadn't heard anything about things getting bad that way in the UK, even though I read the Guardian. It seems no place is truly save.

You wouldn't read about it the Guardian; they are on the side of the 'silencing'.

Wow, I would never have thought that. They seem to be left-leaning, at least as far as the US news they cover.

They are extremely left-leaning - in fact, I'd hardly describe them as 'leaning'. That's the problem, it is the left here who are trying to silence women in particular, but in fact anyone who doesn't have the 'correct view'.

Maybe when we talk about 'silencing women' etc. you and I have different opinions.

No, it's probably the same. It's known as cancel culture here. Where both, right and left, demand that someone is silenced if their opinions differ. I haven't noticed that women are targeted here more than men, though. Maybe because there are more men who they can go after. Here, it's the right who are more inclined to denigrate someone's opinion if it's a woman. The left are sort of equal opportunity silencers.

Very true! Women's bodies are being restricted more than ever and the Right would love to do more.

They'll continue to try. Our only hope is that people, well, a lot of people, will continue to vote against the crazies that are trying to get into office. It would be nice if they'd think about getting the ones already there, out.
