Not a bad haul for February, and all are good to great.
MOVIES WATCHED IN FEBRUARY
Feb 1 - American Experience: Dr. Harvey Wiley, Father of Pure Food
In 1901, government chemist Harvey Wiley set out to prove that Americans were being harmed by chemicals in food. Determined to banish these dangerous substances from dinner tables, he took on the powerful food manufacturers and their allies.
I’d never heard of Dr. Wiley, but he’s now a hero of mine. A thought provoking documentary on the man who made our food safe.
Feb 12 - Ricky Gervais: Humanity (2018)
Live performance of British comedian Ricky Gervais filmed in London's Eventim Apollo.
Director: John L. Spencer (as John L Spencer)
Star: Ricky Gervais
Just so, so funny.
Feb 15 - Little Women (1994)
The March sisters live and grow in post-Civil War America.
Director: Gillian Armstrong
Stars: Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Gabriel Byrne, Claire Danes, Christian Bale, Eric Stoltz
Not a bad adaption, but not my favorite. Still, a good, solid movie.
Feb 19 - Pavarotti (2019)
Life, works and achievements of opera legend Luciano Pavarotti.
Director: Ron Howard
Stars: Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Griminelli, Nicoletta Mantovani
Such a tragedy to lose this man. There was a lot in this documentary that I didn’t know. Well worth watching.
Feb 20 - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Bruce Dern, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Al Pacino
I enjoyed it, no matter how it was slammed by the critics, probably because of its tie to the 60’s television show, Lancer. And I thought Brad Pitt deserved the award.
Feb 21 - Shaft (2019)
JJ Shaft, a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, enlists his family's help to uncover the truth behind his best friend's untimely death.
Director: Tim Story
Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher, Richard Roundtree
Funny, but not as funny as some other movies I’ve watched with Jackson as one of the stars. Actually, more silly than laugh-out-loud funny.
Feb 29 - The Goldfinch (2019)
A boy in New York is taken in by a wealthy Upper East Side family after his mother is killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Director: John Crowley
Stars: Oakes Fegley, Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Jeffrey Wright, Luke Wilson, Sarah Paulson
It’s a difficult movie to get into, but well worth the effort. Lots of plot lines, that all come together at the end. A very good, thoughtful movie.
