I stopped at Sonic yesterday for a chili dog - which was wonderful - I'm parked about 3 empty spaces away from this van. It was like a 70's-something model, cornflower blue, rusted, old, I bet it smelled terrible inside. On the side of the van there was a saying spray painted. The van was so old the spray paint was fading off. Spray painted on the side of this van was the phrase:
Be Happy Be Safe
Life is too short
Outside the front of the van was the driver. A trashy woman at that, although I was only able to see her from the waist down, as she was blocked by the Sonic menu. She was wearing trashy black pants and black socks with white rubber clog-like shoes. I'm told they are called Croc's. She is outside the front of the van talking on the cell phone. While I can not hear that conversation, she does catch my attention when she takes her hand, slams it once against the drivers side door panel and yells "Knock it Off!!!!"
So now she has my attention. I roll my passenger window down about 1/2 way. In the middle row of seats I see the silhoettes of two children. I see arms flying and pillows of some sort being tossed. Then I hear it. I hear the all too familiar sound of a hand slapping skin. It was one child slapping the other, and then the other slapping back and then the crying, and more slapping. the sound reminded me of the fights between Miss and her sister Steph when I was growing up. Slap Slap Slap.
The lady is really pissed now. Instead of one hand slap to the door panel, it now gets three. That hollow sounding echo of her hand hitting the beater van's door. Bang Bang Bang!!! "I SAID KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!!"
The slapping and fighting continue, she stays on the phone outside the van and once again I re-read the faded words written upon this poor van:
Be Happy Be Safe
Life is too short
