And Sam is actively hunting. So the chances of him running into something that will force his hand? At this point, we're probably not talking "if" so much as "when".
Some asshole - demon, monster, hunter, or average Joe - will eventually do something to make Sam act out of rage/revenge.
And as soon as the line is crossed, there's no going back.
Yup. That final trigger. Also hinted at that it could be about saving Dean. Rage/fear make Sam go boom. No control, no reason or measurement. Just... Sam!Hulk! Point of no return. Dean is Sam's reason in more than one way -- salvation AND otherwise. (And vice versa.)
And I also have some thoughts about the Sam/Gordon parallels that I might tackle when we hit our next hiatus, if I remember.
Yeah. Lilith wasn't willing to deal away Dean's soul. I'm curious as to whether there's a Winchester specific reason, a Dean-specific reason, or a let's just twist the knife more into Sam reason. If we only had No Rest... I'd go with the latter. But Crossroad's Gal indicated that her boss wanted Dean's soul, bad. Hmm.
The guy has spent his whole life being shaped into a weapon. I'd love it if Hell and Heaven both had taken notice of said fact and Heaven had the muscle to TAKE Dean for their own agenda. With, as you note, bonus points for putting Dean aka the one person of solid influence back in Sam's sphere, since they want to get a handle on Sam and don't approve of his current demon playmate. (And Ruby I'd actually count as a quicksilver influence, easily tossed aside in the face of Big Bro's wrath at that association. I hope.) Time will tell, I guess.
Is it next week yet? And damn, I'm actually wanting more mytharc episodes, whereas before I was slightly preferring the MOTW ones.
You have some really interesting points and I do agree with them. Sam is following a path that might lead him into evil, but he himself, or his powers for that matter, is not. I love the idea that all this is about choices and the circumstances that lead to those.
reminds me of the book i'm reading now - "A Fistful of Charms" - she's a white earth witch, tweaking black demon spells .... for good. does that make her a black witch now? she doesn't think it does. i think it's the intent behind the powers. and if Sam's intent is for good....
Yeah - it depends on the universe. Good Omens is another where Intent is greater than Eventuality. I just don't think it applies in Kripke's Playground...
Castiel said he brought Dean back because God commanded it. So I have to believe God has his reasons even if he is not sharing.
I think you are right about power having the ability to corrupt but I think it is a wee bit different in Sam's case. My theory after the first four episodes is that Sam using his powers is akin to Mary making the Deal. Permission must be granted, and by drawing on demonic powers Sam is granting permission. But Permission to what or who? I think Azazel's End Game is to have Sam a vessel strong enough to hold Lucifer and channel the fallen angel's power when he returns.
I agree that the Angels don't know where Sam's power will lead and it is the fact that they don't know which makes them extra careful and want to see Sam not open that door.

Bonus side effect of making Sam more likely to listen to them and giving them Dean - the one person who can influence Sam away from Ruby.
