Personally, I hope it's a red herring. It looked like they were going to knock Hidan off a few chapters back, and then he turned around and owned Asuma. (Oh god you're right: last two chapters where they were all but fussing over each other in an Akatsuki-esque way just had me babbling like an incoherent schoolgirl.)

At the very bloody least, I don't like Kakashi just stepping in and being all "mwahaha Deus ex Cheststabbity" like that, and this comes from someone who likes Kakashi. For gods' sake man, let Team 10 kill their own evildoers! It'll take longer, be more fun, and I bloody well want to see Ino and Chouji use the asskicking jutsus they must have picked up over the Timeskip.

Kakashi is an adult though, an acknoweledged experienced shinobi and very powerful. I am far more accepting of this sort of Deus Ex Machina when it involves fighters who you could realistically see taking on Akatsuki and not a bunch of kids. *shrug* I am fairly sure it's going to prove a red herring though, in this case.

I have to admit, the high point of recent chapters has been Hidan and Kakuzu, but I could forgive their buying it... just not this way, with Kakashi from behind with the Chidori, and Hidan unable to do anything. Because if that's the case... it'll, I dunno, give the impression that Team 10 needed him along to bring them down (and make for a unsatisfyingly short fight, although I guess the speed could be a testament to Shika's planning).

If I'm to take them at all seriously post timeskip, they need to establish that Shikamaru's planning + post-Asuma attitude + his team is capable of taking down this Akatsuki pairing, without Kakashi taking such a central role. Otherwise, that little drama as they left with Tsunade will, upon hindsight, be proof that Shikamaru allowed his feelings over Asuma's death to cloud his judgement, not sharpen it, and that Team 10 wasn't enough for the job.
