To Reconnect

Jun 06, 2010 21:59

[Ever since she'd taken her seat, Layer hadn't moved from her station. It was easy to monitor and work her magic over the comm lines, but the difficulty hump came in the form of navigation: Alia was right... they had the right idea, but the spotters needed a little more time yet. Can't stop, have to the weight for a while longer. She could stop to ( Read more... )

[X is a little late to the gathering, but he shows up without fanfare. Stepping into the control room, he glances around and spots the gathering over by Layer's console. When did Layer get here anyway?

...And why wasn't Nana here? He'd gotten so used to her being in navigator control here on Giga, it was a little odd not to see her. He shook his head slightly and then headed to join them. He smiled and gave a wave as he got close.]

Hi, sorry I'm late. It's good to see you again, Layer.

[Alia, flopped down in a chair nearby, tries to manage a smile and a wave at X.

She's not succeeding too well at that first, but it was worth a shot.]

[X managed a smile that he hoped was reassuring for her as he leaned against the console next to Layer's.]

How are you holding up?

[She didn't look too well, but he was hoping it was just a matter of her working too hard, and not more bad news.]

I'm functional.

[But barely.

Her gaze flicks towards Zero for a moment.]

I'm not sure if I should give you our latest, or if Zero would rather fill you in himself, but I don't think you're going to like hearing it.

And I'd like to get your scan underway first thing tomorrow, if you don't have objections.

[X frowned slightly and briefly placed a hand on her shoulder, since he's leaning on her console and is right there.

Bad news, then... But Zero was still right here, so... it couldn't be too bad, right?]

Hang in there.

[A soft sigh escaped him.]

No, no objections.

[He needed to know. He couldn't put it off.]

[For once, she isn't hyper-aware of every potentially awkward moment of contact -- in fact, it actually makes her relax for a moment.]

I'm trying, X. But -- [her tone drops a bit] It's bad.

[He squeezes her shoulder plates just enough for her to register the pressure before releasing.]

We'll get through it.

[Because the alternative didn't bear thinking about.]

...I hope so.

[She sighs quietly.]

This may not be the best time for the details. [Gettin' kinda crowded in here and all.] But if Zero hasn't beaten me to it by then, I'll explain everything before I start that scan tomorrow.

[X offers her a smile that's meant to be reassuring, even if it's thin and strained.]

We always do.

Thanks.

[Sorry, X, but even that isn't going to have much noticeable affect on her right now. It's been one hell of a day.]

X, here.

[Zero greets him by flipping something small and metallic - an e-can! - his way.]

Figure you can use it. We're all pretty beat up right now.

[X caught the e-can with a slight look of surprise, then of gratitude. He hadn't done anything to recharge for a while. Figures Zero would remember to look out for X even in the midst of all their worries.]

Thanks, Zero.

Don't mention it. [Cracks the tab of his own can and drains it slowly, while propping himself up against a wall. The girls have the chairs, and that's fine with him.]

We need to catch up, but we can do it later. The bad news isn't gonna get any less bad if we wait.

[X sighs heavily at the mention of the bad news. He closes his eyes briefly before opening them again and opening his e-can.]

That bad... How're you holding up?

[That was more important to X at the moment than exactly what it was. As long as Zero wasn't giving up, then they'd make it through it. They always managed to make it through.

Funny how he still had faith that this was Zero, even when he didn't have faith in himself anymore...]

[Zero's not giving up; he's just angry and tired, and it shows from his tense shoulders to the limp, lifeless quality of his hair.]

Been better. Trying to hold out as long as I can.

[Now he's -really- scared of offlining, considering. His body isn't his, and if he surrenders his mind even for a moment...]

[He's watching you with that worried look he gets, Zero. He moves from where he's leaning against Alia's console to helping you hold up the wall there. Just close enough to brush shoulders for an instant as he settles, then takes a drink from his e-can.

This close, he drops his voice so that they can at least pretend to have the luxury of privacy.]

Alia finished her scan. [It wasn't a question.] ...you want to tell me? [That was, though. X would find out sooner or later, but he'd rather hear it from Zero so he could gauge how hard his best friend was taking it.]
