Decided to fix a problem today - my sister had long ago complained that the slatted framework in my bed does not work well with my thin straw mattress (but it's nice and cool during summer). This was mainly because if you didn't lie down completely straight or is as heavy as my sister, the mattress would be thin enough that you could feel the spaces between the framework. I didn't mind it as much, but lately, I've also been getting some back problems from it.

I've slept on thinner mattresses before, and remembered that in the dorms, they solved it by inserting a thin piece of plywood (you can break it with bare hands) in between the frame and mattress. The distribution of weight solves the rest.

I didn't have any plywood at home, but I did HAVE some chickenwire rolled up at the back of my cabinet. Simple - cut up the chickenwire and susbtitute for the plywood. Except that my personal pair of pliers have been missing since christmas. My dad borrowed it and of course, it never came back. He's done that before with another pair and a butterfly knife of mine. Sigh.

So I braved going into his stuff, which are plastic bags filled with half-open containers of nuts, bolts and screws. And lots  and lots of different sized wrenches, adjustable ones, monkey wrenches, wrenches that you can turn at some angles and more wrenches. Not a single pair of pliers. Fuck. After half an hour, I came up with a grimy long-nosed plier that didn't even have the wire cutting edge.

Giving up, I ventured into my mom's stuff. Well, I probably inherited the whole, 'bring-your-own-sewing-kit-wherever-you-go' mentality from her, so I had the suspicion that she kept her own toolbox somewhere. I poked around the linen cabinet, her school supplies, her nail polishing kit and voila, a tiny toolbox. And a pair of slightly dainty, rather rusty pliers that were just what I needed.

Anyway, I just finished the whole bed frame thing, my knuckles are a little sore from getting poked by wire edges, but it looks like it's working.

Tomorrow: Monthly bathroom scrubbing time. After that, I'll see if I can fix that slow drain in the kitchen because our two slightly senile old ladies keep trying to flush ground coconut shavings and fish guts into it.

Kanji count: stalled at 300 - must pick up pace again. Damn Suikoden Tierkreis for giving me such a pretty, pretty castle, I can't help but fill it up with people.
