In 1998, Joseph N. Gilson, 20, in jail in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, serving time on a variety of minor charges, had told fellow inmates he planned to hang himself until unconscious so that he would be sent to a mental health facility that would be easier to escape from. On April 2, he put his plan into effect and accidentally strangled himself.
