We were happy then, Billy thinks when he sees the photograph Elijah sends him. We were happy and Christ, how many times did I wear that suit? How much did we have to drink that night? He smiles and strokes a thumb over Dominic’s cheek, suffused pink for eternity, remembering how rough with stubble it had been against his own, how good it had felt. God, but it felt good and we were good and everything was still new and scary and we had no idea what was ahead of us.

We had no idea, he says to Elijah later.
