The smoke from his cigarette made his eyes burn. Elijah squinted as he watched ashes drift lazily across the bottom step and into the small bit of grass that Andy called the back garden. It was an overstatement, and one that made Elijah laugh. Nevertheless, there was room enough to plant a few things as they had discussed - parsley and chives and mint and basil, herbs that Elijah would use in cooking. Green and fragrant herbs, rosemary and dill, alive with taste and texture, and Elijah knew they would never be planted. He put out his cigarette and glanced over his shoulder into the house, hopeful.

It was a good house, perfect for them, with a dark room for Andy and shelves full of music and books for Elijah, whose clothes were strewn about the floor from the front door to the back door. His suit jacket was thrown over a chair, his shoes and socks discarded in a corner of the kitchen, his tie hung over a doorknob. The silence of the house seemed to mock him as the shadows grew longer. Elijah had no idea of the time. Even after several years he was still unused to the long daylight hours of summer and midnight’s arrival soon after dusk.

Shrugging out of his undershirt, sticky with sweat against his back, Elijah lit another cigarette from his pocket, pacing the small bit of grass in only his trousers. He thought of getting dressed again, maybe putting on comfortable jeans and a t-shirt and going to the pub he liked a few blocks away. He thought of leaving his pants halfway up the stairs for a cool shower and bed. He thought he saw movement in the house.

Andy stood watching him, not speaking or moving or even leaning against the doorframe. He looked at Elijah and knew there were no words that could begin to make up for all that he’d been neglecting. There was a pause and Elijah watched Andy struggle yet again with uncertainty, wondering would he ever overcome it. Making a decision, he began removing his clothes until he wore only his trousers like Elijah. It was another moment before Andy was able to move from the house. He stopped just short of Elijah, watched as he took a last drag of his cigarette and tossed it into the grass.

The hand that touched his cheek was dry and smelled of chemicals, meaning Andy had been in the dark room and not at the gallery as Elijah had assumed. The thumb that followed the arch of his eyebrow was hesitant as Elijah gazed steadily at him. The look in Andy’s eyes was one of apology, regret. He opened his mouth to speak and Elijah shook his head slightly.

Andy lifted his other hand to Elijah’s face and then brushed his lips over Elijah’s forehead.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured.

“I know.”

Andy bent his head to kiss Elijah’s neck, his tongue sliding into the hollow of his throat.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I know.”

Andy rested his head on Elijah’s shoulder and closed his eyes as his hands ghosted over Elijah’s back.

“I’m sorry,” he sighed.

“I know.”

Andy unbuttoned and unzipped their trousers, sliding the material down their thighs and into a pool at their feet.

“I’m sorry,” he spoke softly.

“I know.”

Andy pulled Elijah down with him onto the grass and lay next to him.

“I’m sorry.”

“I love you.”
