Happy birthday Star Wars...

30 years ago this weekend Star Wars (A New Hope) was released into the world in the summer of 1977. The film became an instant success; within three weeks of the film's release, 20th Century Fox's stock price doubled to a record high. Before 1977, 20th Century Fox's greatest annual profits were $37,000,000; in 1977, the company earned $79,000,000. Although the film's cultural neutrality helped it to gain international success. Thousands attended a ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where C-3PO, R2-D2 and Darth Vader placed their footprints in the theater's forecourt.

For most of my life I have been a Star Wars fan. I find it funny how much of an impact a movie(s) has had on my life. I would dress up and go to the conventions. I had the comics and toys. I had all the movies, but as big as a part merchandise plays in its success, to me it was so much more than that. It wasn't an escape from everyday life, like it is for most people. It was a way to see the world. It was a modern day epic, reminiscent of Homer. The values I took from Star Wars helped me overcome a lot of shit I went through, and helped me be the person I am today.
