30 days of who - Day 1: Your favourite quote.

Mar 30, 2011 20:39

I don't usually do memes, but I saw this one going around and thought, "what the hell, I've nothing better to do except slack off on my responsibilities." Besides, after watching the new S6 trailers, I'm pretty sure that the Doctor is going to be the only thing on my mind for a good long while. (Is it Easter yet? Bah, I'll get my coat, then ...)

Day 1: Your favourite quote.

I honestly cannot answer this with certainty, because as soon as I think of a quote that I can honestly say sums up the thirty-one series of the best show in the world, I will post it - and I guarantee that same day or the day after, I'll think of another one that describes it even better.

I have a couple, however, that I find incredible:

First Doctor: "Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine."

When he leaves Susan behind, it's such a powerful moment. But I believe there's more to that quote than just the Doctor letting her go live her own life - it seems to be a challenge to everyone surrounding him that yes, he does save the Earth occasionally, and other worlds as well, but it's up to us to prove that we're worth saving. (Pardon the whimsical, shoe-gazing, moral analysis of it all, but that's what I got out of it. Then again, I tend to pick things to bits for no valid reason except to justify my own behaviour and thought processes, so this could all be rubbish indeed.)

The Seventh Doctor has so many good quotes, mostly about the wages of war and the battle between good and evil (even though the Cartmel Master Plan has a few holes in it when merged with the rest of Who "continuity" - I say this with tongue-in-cheek - I do like the whole Doctor-is-more-than-just-another-Time-Lord idea and it fits in with a theory a few people have that Seven knew about the Time War before the first "battle" my own personal canon quite nicely). Anyway, regardless of purpose, here is the iconic quote from the end of "Survival":

Seventh Doctor: "There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do."

Cold tea - how terrible. ;D This quote - besides being beautiful, beautiful prose - is exactly what the Doctor is about (when you take away all the nasty, scary bits). It's what we see the Doctor to be on the outside - the man who's been saving worlds for hundreds of years. What strikes me as funny (funny in the strange way, not humorous) is that so many people put him on a pedestal and tend to ignore his darker side if the chips are in their favour. However, once he oversteps the boundaries, he's accused of being a Shiva sort of figure, destroyer of worlds and all that, which may be true but when you've got the power of time and space in your hands, you can't really have the pedestal without the Shiva. The Doctor isn't perfect - he never was, never will be. He's made some pretty terrible decisions. But to what end? (Sorry, I'll climb down off my soapbox now.)

And just for the sake of some NuWho ...

Eleventh Doctor: "The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant. And we definitely added to his pile of good things."

"Vincent and the Doctor" is definitely among my favourite S5 episodes, because it was so freaking deep. I mean, other episodes have been deep, yes, touching, absolutely, but I don't think I've ever cried so hard over a sci-fi drama in my life (except for the SG1 episode where Janet Fraiser is killed - I was absolutely gone at the memorial scene). Besides, it was one of the only moments where I didn't find Eleven absolutely terrifying.
