"- My 13 y.o. akita adopted a baby robin after a nest was blown out of a tree in a wind storm. Two other babies were found drowned in a pond below. No parents were to be found. At dusk that evening I took it inside and fed it. After a couple of days I started cautiously watching as my dog got curious and started following the bird around my house. She seemed to have maternal concern for the bird. Soon enough the bird and dog became close and followed one another around the house and yard. During the day the bird would often hop onto the dog for a nap. Over the next few weeks the robin learned to fly and would fly about the yard with the dog watching closely. Other robins started curiously observing the strange newcomer and would perch nearby. The bird would spend the days outside with the dog and the nights inside the house. I had to take the bird virtually everywhere because it had to be fed about every half hour. One late summer day as the three of us were hanging out in the yard, my dog jumped up yelping toward the bird who was on top of the chimney. A few seconds later i heard the sound of wings flapping above my head and before I knew it the bird disappeared in the clutches of a red tailed hawk. Needless to say it was a sad moment and the dog remained depressed for weeks"
