Farewell, early twenties and hello mid twenties

I'm now in my mid-twenties, which is a really weird thing to type out. Don't feel any more mature, adult, wiser, etc. At least not any older yet, but that's probably because I've already been feeling older for a while now. Still, biological age is a handy metric ( Read more... )

Thanks! And I have to ask out of curiosity, how much older? But it might be because all of my friends are older than me by something close to a year (where my birthday falls means I should've been a year below everyone in school) so that's probably rubbed off over the years. Or more realistically, the daily grind of academia and research. That'll ages you fast.

Ahh, you're flattering me. It seriously is a solid show overall and excellent when it gets things right, though- it isn't always great but it has enough in its favor that the shortcomings aren't so bad. And they've done this fascinating thing where since the world is going through an industrial revolution, they're presenting a lot of different and divisive ideas of how the world should be run/how problems should be dealt with, ie. if an egalitarian society would be better or democracy or anarchy or if populist rule overrides imperial lineage. On top of the whole move to kind of tackle mental illness in about the only way that they could really do it in an animated show, through an externalization of the problem that obviously isn't realistic but does well enough to represent the actual problems on hand. Also, titular character Korra who's just awesome and I really could write a whole lot more of reasons to watch the show :D Though fair warning, it is a good idea to start with The Last Airbender, which I can't remember if you've seen or not, since it lays a lot of the foundations for the show and it'll make things a lot less confusing.

But on the other hand, lack of free time and work and papers. If you do get the chance/have some time off/are bored on an airplane flight, I'd check it out! Or master the art of multitasking, which is how I've been trying to manage so far.

I'd say somewhere over 25 - 26-27 perhaps? Yeah, academia rubbing off may be part of it. But also my personal expectations because you do the kind of work a PhD candidate in Germany would do (and sometimes more of the work a postdoc would do) and given how German university tends to start late and people who start PhD finish a five year degree before, they tend to be in that age range.

Nooo, I haven't seen "The Last Airbender", but in the context of my last question about awesome women in movies and my general dissatisfaction with my disconnection with popular culture when it comes to things on TV, I am wondering whether picking an animated show with its usually short episodes would be something I may enjoy. Anyway, not before I get back to the USA and my deadlines are over (i.e. not before the second week of November), but I will keep this particular set of shows in my mind.

My last plane did not have proper in seat entertainment. Woe is me! I was for once really looking forward to it (usually I just read a book or try to sleep but this was a super stupidly timed flight) :(

Oh, that's not too far off- the grind of academia, yeah. I just tend to...kind of get stuff lumped at me without much regard, either by proximity or bad luck. But do PhD candidates all have a five year degree prior to their PhD? As in, five years undergrad or something else between?

Legend of Korra's great in serving up heaps of awesome women in TV (someone made a note of how the range of really cool female characters aren't only limited to those under 20, but also those well above 40+). And cause the main character is Korra, so. The Last Airbender doesn't have quite as large serving, partly because it was aimed at a younger audience but has it's own set of female characters who're all really well developed. It's definitely worth keeping in mind, if only because the episodes are so short (literally, you can eat breakfast/dinner while watching one) and it is a quality show.

Ack, that's awful. I'm all for reading on plane rides or sleeping, but sleeping on a plane can be hard enough without trying to figure in the flight time/potential time zone changes.
