Well, I've got some more college-related info for you. Turns out my roommates are going to be from Minnesota and New Jersey. Whether or not they are awesome remains to be seen. In other news, I now know one of the three classes I'll be taking first trimester: "Civil Rights: Malcom & Martin", a seminar dealing with different kinds of political participation and the principles that inform them, focusing on those of MLK and Malcom X in particular. Sounds pretty bad ass.
I've been putting of posting my Intonation thoughts, so here are a few:
- Les Savy Fav are extremely fun to watch.
- The Hold Steady are meant to be seen live. (I didn't dig the album of theirs I have much, but their set was super good.)
- You know what? I really can't be bothered with Xiu Xiu. Don't hate it, but don't really want to listen to (through) it.
- The Decemberists had, not surprisingly, my favorite set. In the past few months they've went from a band I was familar with to a band I really liked to one of what I guess you'd call "my bands". They only other time I've seen a group live possessing this dubious distinction was Pixies back in November. I was kind of surprised at what they did and didn't play from Picaresque, but they played pretty much all the best off Her Majesty and some good ones from Castaways and Cutouts, so I can't complain.
- Second favorite set had to be the Wrens, who played like their lives depended on it. More emotion than any other set at Intonation--you really get a sense, both from the Wrens live and from an album like The Meadowlands, that some of those guys have been through hell. I'll stop before I use another cliche here, but they were really fucking good.
- Third favorite set was the Go! Team, who, contrary to previous reports, did not suck. I wished there had been some instrumentals (the frontwoman, Ninja, can get kind of annoying), but they still rocked pretty bad, and when a group of local community youth were brought on stage to dance it warmed the cockles of my heart.
The GBC Drag Review/Poetry slam was the hardest I've laughed all summer and the hardest I will laugh all summer. Ranks with any of our best meetings--maybe even better than "Space: Battleground of the Future?" and "Amphibians: Choose a Side!". I don't wanna toot my own horn, but, um, beep beep. Good idea, Greg. I especially liked Joe's poem about the freshmen, Jim's re: Rold Gold, Sam Bird's rendition of one of Ricky's (which was very funny in its own right), and Ulfur's line about cutting himself after being made fun of. Now all the people I just mentioned also happen to read this blog, but I'm not pandering, I swear, they were all extremely funny. Amie, our waitress, selected my brother's S&M poem as the winner. It was her last time working that shift, incidentally, which is tragic.
For posterity's sake, here is my contribution to last night:
Gentlemen's Breakfasts
are the best kind in the world
--Wait, hold on a sec.
They make you feel good
in the cockles of your heart
--Seriously, stop.
Debate the issues
while having one, my good man
--Knock it off, butthole!
Think about the vote
while eating pancakes and eggs
--I can't concentrate.
The GBC life
is the life of champions
--Why even bother!?
No chicks at meetings
Vaguely defined disclusion
--Damn it, what is that noise?
