So sayeth the bus driver. "It all tastes like cardboard now," she continued.
"They want $28 for a family pack," answered a man sitting up front. He leaned on a folded-up walker. I tried to vacate my position directly between him and the bus driver, but people were already standing behind me.
"For a what? A steak?"
"A family pack of steak. Four cuts."
"That's a lot of money," the bus driver said.
"Everything's going up. I stopped at a little corner place because the big store didn't have what I wanted ... they want $2.69 for a loaf of bread. $2.69 for a loaf of rye bread!"
Wow, I thought, That's pretty cheap compared to the bread I like.
"It's wheat and corn," the bus driver said, nodding. "Wheat and corn went way up."
"And gasoline! I saw they raised the price seven cents in just the past couple days."
The bus driver's nodding deepened. "I have a pick-up truck. It kills me."
The man with the walker said, "The bus! No wonder they raised fares. I hate to think what it costs to fill up these tanks."
"I don't even wanna go there!" the bus driver laughed.
"We should have a nationwide strike. Nobody shows up at work, goes anywhere, does much of anything. If we all did it ..."
"They're so greedy," the bus driver said, "they wouldn't last a day."
