I'm cherry-picking this quote, and I don't mean my statements to be directed at your mother at all - I'm just doing some general ranting.
Millenials - and perhaps American society in general - are being given a hard sell on "do what you love". As though working for a living is a waste of your life or somehow contemptible. Reading between the lines, they're being told, "You had better love what you're doing because you're sure as shit not gonna get paid for it." It's also classist garbage. As if providing for yourself and your family is dishonorable or a life less worth living.
