I've been meaning to make this journal a little more varied in interests than my old one, and so I thought this might be a good place to start. Olga Gouskova is a Belarus-born Belgian artist who specializes in pictures of women. Her works, in some ways, look more like illustrations than fine art--it's all very sketchy, quite rough, which sometimes I like and sometimes I find a little immature. I really like that I'm not seeing the typical male gaze present in portraits of women--obviously, she is a female artist, and while she's harking back to earlier female portraiture, the women seem fully present in a way she often isn't in previous art. Anyway, I particularly enjoyed this because the art world's favorite hobby is dismissing the pre-Raphaelites but the influence is written all over this one (it seems especially Rossetti-infused), in addition to Art Nouveau. She's frequently exhibited in Belgium, and has had a few shows in London, so I'm hoping she gains more traction in the art world.
