Title: Rebirth
Rating: PG or PG-13ish
Summary: Oaths are meant to be kept, and powers are meant to be used wisely. Those in charge of Heaven make sure of that.
They've gathered, all of them that aren't out on other business. Every angel that can be spared has its eyes on him, as he kneels in the Court of Heaven, head bowed.
God isn't there in a physical form, but Akira knows He is watching. Metatron lays a heavy hand on the boy's head.
"Do you swear, under punishment of eternal damnation, to reject the powers of the demons you have gathered within yourself?"
"... I do." It's a trick question. There's no other answer.
"Do you swear to obey the Lord God, and serve as His instrument of judgement, now and as long as you shall exist?"
Akira swallows hard. "I do."
"Do you swear to obey the Laws, and do as commanded, whatever it may be?"
His voice shakes slightly, but he manages to force out his answer. "I do."
"And do you swear to serve faithfully as the Messiah, in all of the duties of that role, now and in the coming days?"
"... I do." He still doesn't look up - he hasn't been granted permission yet, he can't.
"Then let the demonic power be stripped away from you, Satō Akira, Abel, son of Man, and let the power of the Lord God become your strength."
At first, nothing happens. Akira almost looks up, but remembers not to, not yet. All of a sudden, he cries out, falling to all fours and shaking. It feels like his blood is on fire, and he needs to vomit, but there's nothing in his stomach.
Suddenly, he finds himself in a dark room, the floors and walls made of some thick stone. He punches at it, and his knuckles bleed from the impact. He doesn't care, though, and keeps trying to break through, until his body seizes with pain again and he falls to the floor, crying.
They keep him there for what they tell him is a week, but for all he knows could be several months or years. An angel explains that it's similar to the human process of detoxification in a rehabilitation setting - they need to make sure all of the demonic power has left him before he can begin his work.
When they finally release him, they make him bathe in water that seems far too cold to allow anything to survive, and far too fragrant to allow anything to breathe. They try to make him wear white robes, but he insists on wearing clothes similar to the ones he wore back on Earth, and they allow him this small rebellion.
After being presented to the Court once again, he's forced into training. What seem like hours upon hours of combat and history lessons only serve to frustrate him, and he soon itches to be sent back down to Earth.
They finally allow him to do so.
His first mission - to execute the core believers of the Shomonkai.
