Yeah, Dean and John both have a tendency to forget Sam is a thinking, breathing human who can make his own decisions. I think that sometimes they both get so caught up in 'protecting' Sam, that they sometimes treat him like an object, rather than a person. (I see this a LOT with Dean, and I'm pretty sure it started when Sam was small).
