This is my face after reading Otakon's artist alley rules.

I've had artists telling me that Otakon staff has gone through their stock, counting every piece they brought with them.

If I only sold large, $20 fanart prints and eliminated the small prints and buttons, the rules would be workable, but small, cheap trinkets are what people want and buy.

I've always been very careful in the past to follow the rules, but these are so constraining, I don't know what I'm going to do.

*nodnods* From what I've heard, even well known webcomic artists generally rely on sales of fanart to bring in actual profits at artist alleys. Maybe if you were Penny Arcade or VG Cats caliber, it'd be a different story, but I haven't exactly talked to anyone that big named.

what I think is weird is that they do this when table cost (plus them forcing you to buy a membership) and everything else is going up.

unless artist alley tables are going to be free or really cheap like 10$ they dont need to keep people from making money with fan art unless they chose too.

oh well, I just stick to local cons anyways. Commissions is where I make most money

Especially now with the economy being crap, you need lots of 'impusle items' just to make your table fees. @_@

I wonder, is there a way you can just not title certain works to try and skirt around their rule? I dunno.

As tempting as that is, if the rules are there I'm not going to try and skirt them. :/ The last thing I want is to be kicked out.

Have you thought about selling your original artwork? This is exactly the reason I don't do fan art.

I do sell lots of my original artwork... or at least offer it. A few original prints have okay popularity. It's not the prints so much as the buttons and stickers - absolutely no one wants original art on those, at least not at an anime convention.

You should look into doing bookmarks, necklaces (or at least pendants) of your work. And I find, that if you display your work behind you like on easels (get one or two large prints, images with lots of contrast & red) will help increase your sales... just personal observations from doing shows myself. Seriously about the red... Any of my paintings I display that have a moderate amount of red usually sells really well, or I totally sell out.

I do have bookmarks... not sure what I could do about the necklaces, though. Most of my pictures have a figure heavily integrated into a background, which makes isolating them difficult.

I never thought about the red, but my second most popular original piece (Dr. Oh's Miracle Cures) has a good splash of red to it. Then again, my most popular (Bunneh), has absolutely none. :P
