While looking for christmas tree facts/history I learned this!
Patron trees, Thor's Oak and the figurative Yggdrasil) held special significance for the ancient German tribes appearing throughout historic accounts as sacred symbols and objects. Among the earliest Germanic tribes the Yule tradition was celebrated by sacrificing male animals and slaves by suspending them on the branches of trees.

Me to the girl I know there: You know the products you have out front?
Girl: Yeah
Me: You know those nice candles you have, the Madagascar one?
Girl: Yeah
Me: well, I thought it was kinda funny. My students just learned that Madagascar has become a big dumping ground for waste by neighboring countries and from over extended farming and logging.
Girl: huh.
Me: So really, you're selling a toxic waste candle. *chuckle*
*pause after laughing*
Me: uh...ok...don't tell many people I said that.
Girl: (smiling b/c she has my sense of humor) yeah.
