Did... you die?

Well, I certainly had a dream about dying.

Well, I meant in the dream.

Still, I'm sorry.

Ah, you really don't have to be sorry. Everyone's granted 3 wishes...to die merely means you've achieved them all.

Three wishes?

[Blink blink. Hasn't heard that one before.]

Yes. [Odd...well, he is a bishop, so here you go.]

The Chief of Heaven grants a soul three 'wishes' over their lifetime. When they've achieved all three, they die and are returned to his side. They can ask to be reincarnated then, if they so choose.

What kind of wishes are those?

Depends on who you are. You focus on one wish at a time...some people might wish for love, or freedom...some for salvation, some for redemption.

Some people want to protect the people they love. Some people want a family. Some people just want to see someone happy...but the only one who can make someone happy is themselves, so that can be a little frustrating...

But if you have only three wishes, and you can't die until achieve them... does that mean that you can't have free will in what sort of things you pursue?

No, no, it's not like that. The three wishes are a little different than wishing you had a cupcake or such. And they're not predetermined...they're defined by every soul.

... I'm sorry, I don't think I understand. How are they defined?

[Cultural barriers are multiplied many times when you're from different worlds, sob.]

...Am I not explaining it right? Those wishes...are determined by one's own heart, and nothing else. Achieving them might not be easy, but it's the journey that makes them so precious.
