So in college, I used to scan in slides of artwork, label them and save them to a server. I don't know whether anyone continued it after I left, but hopefully they did. I always loved the hell out of that. I love archiving things. It's tedious sometimes, but so oddly fulfilling.
There's a new iphone app called Be Extra! (The Extraordinaries). You can do small things for non profits while waiting for the dentist. Most of it is tagging photos for various museums, libraries and the Library of Congress. :D There are other charitable things you can do, too!
Here's what I did while on my exercise bike:
I tagged contemporary art for the Mattress Factory in pgh
I described people in photos of Haiti to help people find each other
I tagged photos for the Library of Congress
I transcribed text from photos for an art project called Why do You do What You Do?
And a few other things, but it was oddly fun. It's neat because they make a game out of it. You have 35 seconds to think of as many tags as you can and then you see whether or not they've already been thought of, and if not, your tags are accepted. :D You also gather 2 points for each one you do, and you can aim for getting in the top ten listing, heh. :D I'm currently ranked #32. heh. Ok it sounds boring in print, but I really enjoyed it. heh. Plus, I'm helping!! I like helping.
