Here we go! As always, my year in review post. This was quite a year!
1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?
Ran Finale! Had a Real Adult Job. Helped buy a company.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn't make a Revolution last year; my Revolution for 2013 is to finish college! (This is a big deal, thanks.)
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.
5. What countries did you visit?
Taiwan, Ireland, Scotland, and England! Also a brief layover in Japan.
6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
Not sure! Perhaps a little more direction?
7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I actually can't think of any specific dates that I'll remember!
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Running Finale, definitely.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Utterly failing to finish my thesis, ahah.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing serious, though this itching business is killing me here.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Plane tickets to Taiwan and the British Isles!
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Bob Rehak's, Trine's and Corrie's, A.Lee's, Dyan's.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Greg's.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Plane tickets!
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Finale, MIT, authorship, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, travel, and the Dali play! Also, Mass Effect 3. Jeez, that feels like years ago.
16. What song will always remind you of 2012?
Some Nights, Mountain Sound, King and Lionheart.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
(a) happier or sadder? Sadder. This was a hard fall.
(b) thinner or fatter? Pretty sure I gained a bit of weight.
(c) richer or poorer? Substantially poorer. Whoops. Spent a lot of money traveling, and worked an unpaid internship all summer.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Spending time with on-campus friends.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Procrastinating, as always. Sweet fuck, procrastinating. Let's take that a step further: sitting around on my ass doing nothing.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
All-night Halo 4 marathon. Then a traditional Jewish Christmas: saw a movie (Life of Pi, which was wonderful) and went out for Tibetan food.
21. Did you fall in love in 2012?
I teetered on the edge, but in the end I don't think I stepped over it.
22. What was your favorite TV program?
Shame of Gnomes! Shame of Gnomes so hard. Honorable mention to Adventure Time.
23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I don't think so!
24. What was the best book you read?
Hm, I read some pretty great books! I think Cloud Atlas wins, though.
25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Of Monsters and Men, BT.
26. What did you want and get?
Adventure! A job! A shot at Finale!
27. What did you want and not get?
A lively dorm.
28. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Cabin in the Woods, yo. Sorry Avengers, you were my second-favorite Whedon film of the year.
29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Dorked around Dublin with Reed! It was awesome! I had a pint in an 800-year-old pub, and turned 22.
30. What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Travel.
31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Continuing to evolve in fun ways. Last year's vests for summer, but now with scarves for winter! I found a few wonderful coats and latched onto them. The focus continues to be on finding outfits that work for me, and are still distinctive and on some level coherent.
32. What kept you sane?
Theater, this year.
33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Ben Whishaw.
34. What political issue stirred you the most?
Other than the election? Gun control. Media representation issues!
35. Who did you miss?
I missed my friends who graduated a lot! Kang, Hunter, Jon, and Lee were dearly missed.
36. Who was the best new person you met?
I met some pretty great people this year! A lot of the people who played newly-big roles in my life were ones I'd previously met in passing--Nicole and Dyan, for instance. The main ones who I actually met for the first time this year would probably be Juliette, Allison, and Bob Rehak.
37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
You are not bigger than your problems, but your problems are not bigger than you.
38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
You’ve done the impossible now
Took yourself apart
Made yourself invulnerable
No one can break your heart
so you break it yourself
2012 was a complicated year. The first half was amazing and wonderful and full of great things. The second half was unquestionably my worst semester at Swarthmore to date, despite some really great parts. It was a year of unsettlement. I find myself now not at crossroads but rather adrift. There are not so much paths before me as myriad directions, and I'm not yet sure which one to take.
2012 was a year of leaving things, moving away from things, drifting apart and learning to move on. It was a year when things broke in strange ways, and came back together differently--not always better, not always worse, but always different.
Next year I thing is for finding direction. It's an open-ended year, but my hopes and high.
Here's to tomorrow, and here's to next year.
