just got back from the movies with jim z. we saw "the life aquatic with steve zissou" (paid full price, after much confusion resulting from my thought it would be a matinee; stupid "holiday period" bullcrap) and "closer." i wish it had been the other way around, but at least this time i paid for the one liked better (sunday was the reverse). i can highly recommend tlawsz if you enjoy offbeat humor and "rushmore." it's official: i only like even-numbered wes anderson-directed films. thought "bottle rocket" was a dud, adore "rushmore," and banged my head on the table after "the royal tenenbaums." i'll figure out whether tlawsz is the best film of the year next week. i need time to think.
in "closer," i was pissed a gioacchino rossini overture was used to narrate one of the scenes. i couldn't remember which one it was (they all sound glorious to me, but i often listen to them without bothering to memorize anything but favorite track numbers) until the closing credits rolled: "la cenerentola" (cinderella). very appropriate for the scene, quite clever. still sad if this is what makes the piece famous. rossini's work deserves better, even if he didn't write all of it.
