last night, i read arthur ransome's "the fool of the world and the flying ship" (with pictures by uri shulevitz), followed by "the stinky cheese man and other fairly stupid tales" by jon scieszka and illustrated by lane smith. plenty of children's books are being absorbed by my brain lately, i know. i can't help it.

I was thinking of the Fool of the World recently. I'd read a couple retellings of the story, and they were each different. E.g. there were two different tests in which a whole lot of stuff had to be eaten, and then a lot of barrels of wine had to be drunk, and two different people did those. And they were called the Eater and the Drinker. It seemed a little too obvious to me ... I preferred the more creative solution of having the stick-man's wife come up and eat and drink everything because all the food looks lovely!

I just got a book today, a really huge book, that basically lists a billion books for kids in the grades 9-12. I looked in the index for Hungary, but I didn't like the kinds of books they recommended.
