Went to see Anaal Nathrakh on Thursday in The Underworld.
Due to a series of events i missed the first two bands of the night, Leechwoman and Ted Maul, but arrived just in time for The Axis of Perdition (Khold cancelled at pretty much the last minute so Middlesbrough lads The Axis of Perdition filled in).
But, oh dear, were The Axis... disappointing. I've only heard their last album, 'Deleted Scenes From the Transition Hoppital', and it really is very good. Haunting, eerie ambience with very dissonant use of instruments. However, they sounded very little like that live, with the (power) electronics being far to much to the fore and the dissonant use of their instruments being a bit too dissonant. They didn't look like they were having much fun (nor did the audience) and i suspect they hadn't spent endless hours in the practice room.
Anaal Nathrakh, however, were f**ckin' great! Some sounds problems in the first two songs were overcome and they proceeded to rip the place apart. The sound was fantastic, very close to their sound on record. Amazing musicianship from all concerned, especially Shane Embury and Danny Carrera (guest appearances) on bass and drums respectively. And vocalist Dave Cunt is such a good frontman, stomping around the stage screamin' the bee-jaysus out of his lungs. Happily for me, and most of the audience, over half their set-list was from 'The Codex Necro'! Down...on...your...knees.....................
