...seldom works.
I had barely started working thursday, when a friend of mine called me almost in tears and asked for help to get something done for her exam paper that was turned in friday. Being the nice and helpful person I am I said yes and tried to calm her down before we hung up. So I put my own work aside and instead went to work reading the article she couldn't her head around and writing notes to it. Then I went to bed.
Next morning my alarm woke me at six. I can't remember the last time I voluntarily got up at six. (I'm not a morning person). I got up, got coffee, got dressed and jumped on my bike. It was cold and crips outside with no wind. The sun came up over the horison as I rode towards campus. Quite nice actually and I wish I had had my camera with me.
We met about half past eight and got down to work probably a quater to nine. From this point and until one o'clock she got just over 2,000 words written with my help, which was well within the accepted amount for her paper. She was very happy and we both feel she might even get a passing grade even though we didn't have time to make corrections. Crossed fingers!
She has promised me a good dinner and a cape in payment. ;) And since I love capes I'm not saying no to that. ;D But honestly when I said yes to helping I expected nothing but gratitude in return. So the dinner and cape is just a bonus to me.
After I had sent her to turn her paper in, I got to talk a bit with her husband and baby who came to pick her up and then I ended up hanging out with some of the other students in the friday bar. Not that I had any money on me, but it's nice to talk with people.
I finally got home just past six. I was too knackered to cook dinner and ended up going for a nap before getting dinner. Let's just say that I ended up eating rather late and I never got any work done for my thesis that day.
My plan thursday had been to take out one day to help my friend and then to get back to work friday afternoon/evening, but my head couldn't do it after the lack of sleep and working all morning. Even today I had trouble really waking up and getting to work. (Hurrah for coffee). So instead of just taking out a single day to help another it ended up becoming two days and today was less productive than it should have been. Next week will be a busy week!
Sometimes I wonder if I'm too nice, but then I remember that I love helping others and it makes me feel good. It just isn't that practical at times.
