Volcanos are best admired from a (long) distance

So, we got an ash cloud over us now. Interesting. Especially considering we're a country big nature fenomens tend to just skip around.

So, aside from the pretty sunsets I'm wondering what else this can bring. Sure, all aircrafts are being kept on the ground from this day and until the ash go away from our airspace, but beside that I'm wondering what ash in the stratosphere can do.
So, having read a bit about volcanos I know a thigh layer of ash can block out some of the sun and make the temperatures drop. Of course this would probably require a lot more ash than the current outbreak gives(wouldn't it be 'fun' if Katla erupted? That's one big motherf****r volcano! o_O) or maybe just that Eyjafjallajökull stays active for a long time. Would be rather sad to have a cold summer after a cold winter, so I'd rather it didn't stay active for too long.
Of course there's the ecology of this, too. I don't think a cold summer with part of the sun blocked by ash would be good for the farming industry. Just imagine the crops not maturing on time or growing enough. That would really be bad for the farmers.
So, despite being very interested in all this, I'll just hope the eruption will end soon and won't trigger Katla into erupting. That would really lay waste to a lot of Iceland. o_O *cross fingers for nothing worse happening to the icelandic people*
