On the social skills front, I found I improved enormously when I started going to knitting groups. I do fine listening and talking to people one-on-one, but I was an only child and a bit of a loner in school, so I haven't often had to deal with conversations involving half a dozen people. With my hands busy I found it easier to shut up and listen, and learned to judge when I can jump in with something of my own to say. (And also learned that if the conversation moves on before I get a chance to share my thought, to just let it go.) Any hobby that has people gathering to DO something, not just talk, would probably be just as good of an experience. Or even a book club, since those are a bit more formal than conversational free for all.
