This... He had thought the old gelding was just a random horse from the royal stables, not Arthur’s first horse. He felt warmth spread through his chest at the thought, but tamped any other thoughts down when the king focussed his attention on him. made me warm too.
And the thought of a surly dog following Uther around made me lol.
For the record, you are a total enabler! The worst part is, there is more of this verse bouncing around in my brain. GAH!
I really enjoyed the idea of Arthur being put out because he didn't get the horse he wanted but Merlin being more than happy with it. There's something about a boy and his horse...
I can't imagine Uther to be the sort to tolerate a drooling, excited dog and fur on his clothes all that well.
Seeing how Arthur treated his previous manservant in the very beginning made me think of how bad his behaviour might have been. It's not because he was intending to be cruel and malicious, but simply because he had never thought about it from anyone's perspective but his own.
So sweet and... well cannon This is the best compliment anyone can give me!
I don't think Arthur has quite taken the step to think of the mare as his stand in. (That's for later) I think it's more that Arthur realizes he appreciates Merlin's more stubborn qualities enough to want a bunch of horsey-Merlins frolicking in the fields. Sometime later, he is going to have the horrible realization that he's given himself an Merlin kids!:)
I really like this story. There are a lot of nice bits. Uther and the dog, Arthur giving his old horse to Merlin to ride. I would love to see more about Merlin training Tairnich with Arthur's help.
I once helped a friend mate her stallion with a mare. He was young and knew what he wanted to do but didn't know how to go about it. I had to hold the mare who was older and impatient for him to GET on with it!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. You may get your wish... there is so much more of this verse bouncing around in my brain, that I may end up writing a follow up with how things progress from there.
I was a little concerned about the horsey bits bits. Being a country girl myself I often wonder if my sensibilities are skewed or if I'm just more pragmatic about these things.
Excellent! I loved how the guys came together, it's so very them! Arthur's story about the maid made me tear up a bit, but I like how you made Arthur human and capable of making mistakes (not that we didn't already know that, but you portrayed it very well). I'm glad he learned from it, though it was too late for that maid. I wonder if Arthur ever knew what happened to her, if she still married her suitor or not.
I think Arthur and the maid is an important step to making him receptive to Merlin's prodding to become a better person. It's the moment when he realizes that he isn't the centre of everyone's universe and that even the lower classes have hopes and dreams in their lives. At the time, I don't think he is certain what to do with this information, so he makes a few rules for himself and continues being a prat, but the seed is planted. Ironically, the thing that makes him receptive to Merlin in one way also hinders him from getting as close as he'd like.

Love oblivious Merlin - especially when he said Tairnich reminded him of Merlin, and was mating Tairnich with his mare. <3
