Two Teens Killed In Single-Car Crash

POSTED: 7:33 am EDT June 3, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two teenagers are dead after the car they were in slammed into a tree in Arlington just before midnight Wednesday.

Police said 19-year-old Nicholas Dyer (pictured, left) was driving around a curve too fast when he lost control of the car and slammed into a tree at the intersection of Fort Caroline and Mount Pleasant roads.

The impact killed both Dyer and his passenger, 17-year-old Matthew Perret (pictured, right).

Friends and family gathered around the site Thursday morning.

Dyer's friend Shaun Gayton said he was on his way to see Gayton's new house.

"I just wanted him to come by and say hi. I hadn't seen him for a little while. I was getting on my feet and got my own place. I wanted him to come by and see it," Gayton explained.

Patricia Bonadie, who lives near the accident scene, owns the property where the accident occurred.

"I felt the whole house shake," she recalled.

Bonadie said a similar crash happened just two months earlier.

Detectives said they found evidence at the scene that may suggest alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Neither teen was wearing a seat belt.
