I'm just a dumb design major working retail.
But seriously though... I think whether you defer or not, it sounds like either of your ideas to pass that year away would not only be fun but useful (educational) towards going into grad school.
I hope you stay somewhere moderately close. If you don't we have a lot more hanging out to do to fulfill our quota.
