the last unicorn was a movie i watched nearly every day when i was six or seven. we never owned it, but i would rent it whenever possible and wear that vhs thin! i heard a year or two ago that tptb were planning on making a live-action version of it and was, obviously, excited. alas, it looks like that's dead in the water, and anyway - jonathan rhys meyers as schmendrick? i think not. so! i decided i'd do my very own casting for a live-action version of the movie that pretty much was my childhood.
clémence poésy as the unicorn / lady amalthea
i have been mortal, and some part of me is mortal yet. i am no longer like the others, for no unicorn was ever born who could regret, but i now i do. i regret.
there was really no competition as to who would be my amalthea. she's got the hair, the delicate but not typically pretty features, and the soulful, sad, almost violet eyes. perfection for amalthea, in my books!
jack davenport as schmendrick
i can't do this very much longer. he had me juggling teacups all night long. teacups! with tea in them!
he's maybe a little older than schmendrick is meant to be, but jack does hapless so well i couldn't help but think of him. he's got the right look and the right attitude - if you don't believe me, watch pirates of the caribbean: dead man's chest. he goes from goofball to serious with absolute ease, and retains affable charm the entire time.
helena bonham carter as molly grue
but you do. you have magic. maybe you can't find it, but it's there. you called robin hood, and there is no robin hood. you have all the power you need if you dared to look for it.
i think it's helena's hair that really sold me on her for molly, but then i realised the whole package fit. she's small but feisty, frail looking but with a real solidness, and she's got a face that can easily portray molly's strength and weary sadness.
ryan gosling as prince lír
heroes know that things must happen when it is time for them to happen. a quest may not simply be abandoned; unicorns may go unrescued for a long time, but not forever; a happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.
it was a toss up between ryan and garrett hedlund, but while garrett might seem more typically princely, ryan just has a goddamn perfect face for lír. ryan can totally pull off the heroic part of lír, too (young hercules anyone).
bill nighy as king haggard
you are losing my interest, and that is very dangerous.
while i do think he's amazing, it would've been far too easy to go for christopher lee, who did his voice in the movie! saruman's been done. bill nighy, on the other hand, both looks the part and does villain oh so well.
zach galifianakis as captain cully
well, jack, who is it you bring us - comrade, or captive?
i thought of john rhys davies as gimly at first, but again, too easy! zach came into my head out of nowhere and he's awesome, and captain cully only has a small role but it's comedy gold in the right hands. zach's got the talent and the right amount of ginge to pull this off.
judi dench as mommy fortuna
oh, she'll kill me one day or another. but she will remember forever that i caught her, and i held her prisoner. so there's my immortality, eh?
dame judi dench is not nearly as horrendous looking as mommy fortuna is meant to be, but wouldn't she just rock this role? then again, my second choice is betty white.
philip seymour hoffman as the butterfly
it's you and me, moth! hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to...
feel free to look at me strangely for this one, but man, the walrus can do anything. he's also absolutely hilarious and would make the strangest and most bizarrely funny butterfly possible, which ... totally works. he's also got the look down pat in charlie wilson's war - just add the snowbeard from the boat that rocked and we're set!
