hey livejournal, its been awhile.

what to talk about, what to talk about.

i thought i was going to have to do CPR on a girl yesterday in clinical. sad to say, but i loved the adrenaline rush from it. oh, and she was fine and stable and we didnt have to do anything but monitor...but the thought of actually having to do it made my day, as sick as that sounds.

basically, she was a seizure pt and kept having mini seizures all day. we came in, took her to the bathroom, brought her back to bed and everything was cute so the nurse went to go get her meds and she ended up falling asleep waiting so when the nurse came back, we tried to wake her up...but she wouldnt respond. soooo we started shaking her and yelling her name; still no response. did sternal rubs; still no repsonse. so that's when the thought came to me "look to see if she is breathing...that will be the first to go" so i watched her chest and she was still breathing. so we hooked her up to a monitor and all her vitals were stable, she just wouldnt wake up, so no CPR was needed.

can i just say, residents are idiots... i was asked like 5 times "did she have any seizure activity before this happened?" and my response was "her eye was drooping and she was staring off" (this is a form of a seizure) and 5 minutes later "did she have a seizure before this happened" and i would say "yeah, her eye was drooping and she was staring off" and another 2 minutes later "did she have any seizure activity before this happened?" UHM, HELLOOOOOOOO, LISTEN TO ME! and then "what meds was she given?" they were told "what meds was she given again?" and again they were told and another 5 min later "and what meds was she given?"...and then one of the doctors said "well, she had benadryl...you know how that makes people sleep" and i looked at him and said "you honestly think that the benadryl would have knocked her out to the point she was not responsive to a sternal rub?" and his reply "yeah, you are right"...fucking idiot. then he came to the conclusion "maybe its narcolepsy..." seriously doctor? SERIOUSLY? so my instructor came in later and we told her what happened and she left the room to kind of research the symptoms and came back with some sort of disorder that occurs with seizure patients. i cant remember the name, but when you have a seizure pt and they have multiple ones or a grand mal, after they will knock out like our girl and not be responsive, but its normal and they are completely stable. So after the residents left to call their head doctor, she went and told them what she thought and the response of one was "OF COURSE IT IS" and its like really? earlier you thought it was narcolepsy...

so overall, that was the highlight to my day.

oh and thursday at work, i missed a code blue on the floor 5 min before i came back from lunch... one of the nurses i am close with goes "paige...you missed the code" and i was like "YEAH, DAMNIT...I KNOW" i know anyone who actually takes the time to read this is going to think i am completely fucked up and sick...but keep in mind, i want to work trauma and i truely am ready to step in and safe a life and so far, i have not yet had the opportunity and i am itching for it.
