I recommend using the books Minna no nihongo they're the best I found so far and they seem to be the most used books all over the world. That's what we used in University. You can also get the CDs and videos that come with them..though that might be a little expensive and not totally necessary.
An other thing that I recommend is checking out http://www.japanesepod101.com (I have an account) you can have a 7 days trial. It's bazillions of conversations, reading material, lessons, etc... all levels! Best for practice and for people who don't like books like me!

For Kanji I recommend White Rabbit Press flashcards. They are very well made. http://whiterabbitpress.com/

Also on the White rabbit press site they have story books... these are good to develop your listening skills. http://www.whiterabbitpress.com/catalog/Japanese-Graded-Readers-Level-1-Volume-1-w-CD-p-16457.html
