So as my Facebook and Twitter friendsies know, I volunteered at a triathlon yesterday. It was so awesome. I just posted a bunch of pictures to the
trigeeks community, but thought I'd post here, too, in case anyone cares. ;) I am just copy/pasting my entry, because it's getting late and I have to get up in 7 hours.
I showed up at 6 AM and helped out with bodymarking, then held a wave sign, then headed to the finish line to help "catch" those who needed it, and got to hand out medals to the last few finishers. :)
I got to meet Matt Reed, Andy Potts, Sarah Groff and Mirinda Carfrae (all four of them signed swim caps for me. I was so starstruck!). Oh! And Paula Newby Frasier, which was like meeting the president or something. She was standing in the finish area next to me talking to the pros as they finished. I kept thinking I knew her from somewhere, then I finally realized who she was. She was very nice. :)
Being there and seeing all of the CAF (Challenged Athletes Foundation-most of them have lost limbs) competitors makes me feel like a big d-bag every time I try to come up with some trivial reason for not working out. They were very inspiring. Heck, everyone there was inspiring.
Aanyway. I thought I would share a few (ok, a lot) pictures (and a short/shaky video I took of the scene a few minutes before the women's 30-34 wave took off)
Here's the video:

Andy Potts set a new course record for the swim- 21 minutes and some change, I think
Eventual winner, Matt Reed
Rock on
Last swimmer out of the water. He was being followed by a herd of lifeguards on paddleboards. I think he missed the cut-off time, but he decided to continue on anyway.
Mirinda heading out on the run
We are practically training buddies now
I am certain that a much better version of this picture will be printed/posted by a magazine or two-they stood there for the photographers for a couple of minutes taking different angles of that shot.
I thought this was pretty cool-father and son finishers.
The last finisher being escorted in by a group of volunteers. She missed the cut-off by about 15 minutes, which is a bummer, but I am so glad she didn't have to finish alone.
Also check out
the North County Times. I'm in the second picture. I love picture #9-the first three womens finishers. It's kind of comical.
