So I'm trying to do these in order of my exposure to them. I know these are probably not exactly what this meme was actually looking for, but I never really bought entire albums.
1. Put the Hammer Down - Various Artists
I have no idea where this album came from, but it is the first album I remember listening to over and over again (and making everyone else listen to). It had "Convoy," which was probably my favorite song for years and "Phantom 309." It was trucker music and, at the time when BJ and the Bear and Smokey and the Bandit reigned supreme, it was the coolest thing ever to me.
2. Metal Health - Quiet Riot
This was my brother's album, but I remember we listened to it on the way to school all the time. I would stare at the cover. I love "Cum on Feel the Noize," "Metal Health," and "Slick Black Cadillac." To this day, when I think of metal, I mentally hear "Bang your head!"
3. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC
This was another of my brother's albums that I obsessed over. I loved the title song, but honestly, I was obsessed ith "Big Balls." I really like ever single song on this album and still, to this day, mentally sing "Ride on" when going over bridges (there's a story there, but I don't remember it).
4. The Country Side of Life - Alabama
So many good songs on this one. I didn't realize, back when I had it, that it was a compilation. I remember "Down on Longboat Key" and "Never Be One" were songs that I loved, but had never heard on the radio.
5. He Thinks He's Ray Stevens - Ray Stevens
OMG how I love Ray Stevens. There's a song, "Fred," on this album about a dead dog. The chorus was "Hey Fred, you were a good dog. Now your flat out on the freeway and drying in the sun" I have no idea why I loved that song so much. I knew a guy in high school named Jayfred, so I used to sing "Jayfred, you were a good dog..." at him when we were at our lockers...no wonder he didn't like me very much.
6. The Final Countdown - Europe
This was the first metal album that I ever bought (no comments please, all you metalheads). I honestly have no idea why I bought it. I think it was because it was $2 at MagicMart. In all honesty I did like "Carrie" and "The Final Countdown."
7. The Monkees Present - The Monkees
Even though Peter was not on this album, it was probably my favorite. It is a Mike-heavy album, and I like Mike's songs. "Listen to the Band" is probably one of my all time favorite songs.
8. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones, LTD - The Monkees
I have to have two Monkees albums just because they kicked off my teen fan phase of music appreciation. Music suddenly became my life. This was just a tight album all around. you could see each of their personalities shining through. "Daily Nightly" is funktastic.
9. Unmasked - Kiss
This album started my love affair with Kiss. I bought it for a dollar at a flea market (it was really more like a car boot sale, but I don't know what the American term for that is) in Wise. It is not may favorite Kiss album, but it does have sentimental value. I did like "Shandi."
10. Welcome to My Nightmare - Alice Cooper
This album started my obsession with the Coop. Every song on this album is a winner. My friend, Shawn, and I used to sing "Cold Ethyl" at Jayfred in geography class (notice I never say "to"). The difference here is that he started singing along after a while. How can you not love a song about necrophilia? Again, this goes a long way to explain why Jayfred stopped responding to my emails.
11. Bark at the Moon - Ozzy Osborne
Funny how my love for werewolves lead me to Ozzy. I love Ozzy. My niece, Jessica, used to grab this tape, point at the picture on the cover and say "Play Fozzy!" She was 3. I'm not sure if she thought he was Fozzie Bear, or what, but it was hilarious.
12. Permanent Vacation - Aerosmith
This album had "Angel" on it, which I loved. It was a good album all the way through and it was the first album I ever ordered online. It was through a music store on GEnie (which predated AOL).
13. Have You Seen Me Lately? - Sam Kinison
I'm not sure this counts, but I really loved this album. I loves Sam Kinison. Yes, he was nasty, offensive, and loud, but, strangely, I loved his relationship with God. Scoff if you want to, but I'd really say, of all the albums I've mentioned, this one did end up having a profound influence on me in that area. I can see why Christians would not like him, but I can remember listening to this and thinking (for the first time) 'I bet God has a sense of humor,' and it sort of strengthened my faith. It's the same feeling I get from Kevin Smith.
14. Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty
This album makes me think of summer. "Free Fallin'" was just a great lazy day song. It made me very happy
15. The Headless Children - W.A.S.P.
Blackie Lawless is a beautiful man. The song that hooked me on them was "The Real Me" which was a remake, but got me to notice them. I love "Love Machine" and "Blind in Texas."
16. Twice Shy - Great White
This is a solid album all the way through. I saw them in concert for this album, and I have to say, I think I liked this show better than Kiss. We'd listen to this album at night during road trips in the back of dad's old Chevy Silverado (nicknamed the Magic Bus, by the UMYF).
17. Pet Sematary - Ramones
"Ancient goblins and wild loons!" Thus began my love of the Ramones. I'm notorious for singing lyrics incorrectly. I just looked these up and found that the correct words are "Ancient goblins and warlords." I like "wild loons" better and will keep singing it that way. This was just a single. "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" was the B track. I think I might have seen the video for this song before I saw the movie, but either way, I was hooked on the Ramones from that point on.
18. Metallica - Metallica
Call me a poser all you want, but when James Hetfield decided to take some voice lessons, work on enunciating his words, and slowing down a bit, I liked what I heard. And Justice for All was the first album I had from them, and I liked it, but I loved this album. This is another tight album all the way through. I love James' voice.
19. Ten - Pearl Jam
I can honestly say this is one of the Top 10 albums of all time for me. There is not one bad song on this album. "Black" is probably another of my favorite songs of all time.
20. Blood Sugar Sex Magik- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Anthony Keidis is also a beautiful man. Beyond that, this album, too, is one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Bubbling over with each of the four words in its title, it enamored me from the beginning. I remember teaching my nephew, John, to sing "Under the Bridge" when he was 2 or 3.
21. Requiem Mass in D Minor - Mozart
Okay, I'll admit it. I fell in love with this song because of the movie, Amadeus, but I really love the lacrimosa and the confutates. I saw the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra perform this, and it was just lovely. I wish someone would perform it at Southeastern. I might have minored in Latin because of this. It is just a beautiful piece.
22. Encomium - Various artists
This is a Led Zeppelin Tribute album. I love Led Zeppelin, but I have to pick this tribute album because it has Duran Duran's cover of "Thank You," which is our song. Jessie and I used to listen to this all the time in our little duplex on E. Coleman. All the covers are really good.
23. Pure Moods - Various Artists
Yes, we ordered it from the infomercial, but it was so worth it. The songs are wonderful, and even in the most chaotic times, its calming influence has helped us settle down and sleep. "Tubular Bells," "Sail Away," and "Sadness: Part One" are all songs that I've always liked, but the Native American chant, "Yeha Noha" is probably my favorite.
24. O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack - Various Artists
I love this movie, but I love the music even more. I have this soundtrack in my office and often have it playing when I have student meetings to put me in a more forgiving mood. I love bluegrass/ gospel music and this is a great collection.
25. Across the Universe Soundtrack - Various Artists
I am ashamed to say I never owned a Beatles album. I had a bunch of singles, and I had an Abbey Road sleeve with no record in it. However, I do love the Beatles. That said, I love this soundtrack. There are some songs on here that I even like better than the original versions, like "Dear Prudence" and "Blackbird." It single-handedly jumpstarted my love for the Beatles again.
