Movies and stuff

So, I pathetically went to the movies on my own on Friday. It was the first time since the Summer of Sith.

I went to see Tropic Thunder, which, due to the hype, I sorta forgot (or at least moved to the bad of my mind) that it was a Ben Stiller flick, which is stupid, because Ben has been quoted all over headline News about it.. It was ever the Ben Stiller flick. That aside, I enjoyed it. There are fake trailers before the movie starts that are hilarious. The one for RDJr's character's movie is especially amusing (and it has Tobey McGuire in it). I really loved RDJr, but I'm biased on that front. Jack Black, whom I also like, was funny, but oddly forgettable in this (except for one very graphic withdrawal-induced speech). Ben Stiller was...Ben Stiller...I mean, he was okay, but he was who he always plays. The supporting cast actually got more of my attention than the big three. The real black guy (if you haven't heard, RDJr plays a method actor who went through a pigment operation to make himself black for the lead role) is great. His name is Brandon T. Jackson, but other than that, I'm not familiar with him. Then there is the young, rookie actor, played by Jay Baruchel, who I've also never seen before, but he was easily my favorite character in the movie. He reminds me of Justin Long, whom I lurve. I'm not overly fond of Matthew McConaughey, but his character was funny, too. There was actor who I actually go out of my way to avoid paying for his movies in this that is sort of hidden away in the imdb listings. I thought that was a little underhanded. He was funny, but I still don't like him.

Earlier in the week, I finally got the chance to see Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.

I like Joss Whedon's stuff (well, at least the stuff I know a bout, like Serenity.) I really, really love Neil Patrick Harris in this.

I also saw the X-files movie. Everyone knows I'm an X-phile, and I was glad to see Scully and Mulder again, but the movie wasn't all that good. It was very much like my favorite episode of all time, "Beyond the Sea," but in reverse. Sadly, "Beyond the Sea" was better. There was a dynamic between Scully and Mulder that got lost later on in the series due to the plotline. It carried through to the movie. Still, it was awfully good to see Duchovny again (and to hear from him on his blog...I hope he keeps it up).

Yesterday, I watched Superhero Movie. It was actually good. I felt it was much better that the other "Movie" Movie' (I've found out it was done by different people than the last few). It was still silly, but in a good Airplane silly way. Drake Bell was pretty good in it. I like him. Most people know my love for Nickelodeon shows, by now. For some reason Drake and Josh has always intrigued me, and it is interesting seeing them make real movies. He's going to be in another movie coming up, called College, which looks raunchy. This bothers me slightly, but unlike Dan Radcliffe's Equus decision, at least Bell's show has been out of production for a few years (not that they still don't play it all the time). Anyway, back to the movie; it actually had a pretty good villain and plot (granted it followed Spiderman for the most part, but there was enough of a distinction that I mostly comfortable saying "plot"). Leslie Neilson was pretty funny, as usually, and Marion Ross was in it, too. One of her scenes was probably one of the funniest to me. I really hate fart jokes in movies (btw there JB's parody trailer in Tropic Thunder takes a poke at this and is funny), but Marion Ross's over the top scene had me laughing in spite of myself. Another joke had to do with the actor I hate (see above). It was funny, too. It wasn't the best movie in the world, but I liked it.

So, I guess that's it. I think my movie going days will be limited, but we'll have to see. I imagine I'll be taking the kids to see the new Star Wars thing next week, though I really have no desire. (I really hate the Clone wars...how Lucas could have made something that sounded so cool into something that ended up being so lame is beyond me...and I'll never forgive him for Attack of the Clones...

Ah, well. Until later...
