I got a new guitar. After 3 or 4 years of mourning my pretty Dolly, my first instrument, a classical guitar who was irreparably damaged by getting kicked down the stairs after a sibling left her in the basement doorway... I did have a metal-stringed fellow, whose sound was essentially SHIT regardless of the fact that he didn't suit my music anyway...
My new girl is stunning. She's a Valencia VG-30R. Her sound is UNWORLDLY gorgeous. Not only does she make me wonder why I ever thought metal strings would do my music justice, she's like an evolution after what Dolly sounded like. Dolly, bless her, was very dear to me, but she was also a cheap model I picked up for under $100 at Costco. The new girl is real quality -- it's amazing to me how instantly that's apparent, because I've never played a classical guitar other than Dolly before. She's stunning and rich and pure-sounding... eee.
She's a beauty to look at, too. Mahogany front, rosewood neck, and cedar back, all natural finish and polished to a mirror-shine with pretty-patterned steel bits holding the tuners in place. I didn't even notice until I got her home, but at the very top of the neck is the letter V painted in goldenrod-yellow. Perfectly, she's already branded with the first initial of my name.
So now I get to play her until I find her name, and remember all the chords to my old songs.
Also, in other music geekery news, I would like to say... did Coldplay pay off the entire music industry to be considered rock? Seriously? I am not fucking kidding. This
music widget here thinks they're related to GnR. My local rock station keeps playing them... and I mean it's not that I think they're BAD (repetative maybe, but not BAD), but "Fix You" is in no way similar to "Welcome to the Jungle" and "X & Y" is not remotely like "Civil War." Coldplay is NOT THAT KIND OF ROCK. Or even really rock at all, IMHO. They're like... trancey soft-rock or something, maybe. Maybe. On the scale of genre, they're hangin' somewhere between Beck and Clay Aiken. So whyyyyy does everybody think they're ROCK?
